Description

This is a variant of the cross-staff or Jacob’s staff illustrated by Leonardo in the Codex Atlanticus (400v, formerly 148vb). Instead of the cross-rod, this instrument has a cross at the end of the main stick, enabling its user to measure heights and widths at the same time, or to overturn a height onto the horizontal plane to measure its dimension directly.
