defended with such energy for a quarter of a century, in the face of general 
indifference, over a broader and more receptive terrain (1).
 

Landrieu examined the register, noted the great variation in number within the 
audience, "from seven in 1813 to a hundred and twenty-eight in the year 1810" 
and concluded: "As regards the names of the students who could have given us 
some indication of the influence of Lamarck on the young generation of his time, 
they are largely unknown" (2).  
 

He was however pleased to quote a few names which had escaped anonymity. Two 
Italian zoologist-historians, Lorenzo Camerano and Francesco Saverio Monticelli, 
had just published preliminary studies centred on two pupils of Lamarck: Franco 
Andrea Bonelli (1785-1830), Professor of Zoology at the University of Turin from 
1811 to 1830, and Giosué Sangiovanni (1775-1849), who occupied the chair of 
Comparative Anatomy and Zoology in Naples at different periods between 1807 and 
1849 (3).  Other names too attracted Landrieu's attention, including those of 
geologists Jean-Baptiste-Julien d'Omalius d'Halloy and Louis-Constant Prévost 
and zoologists Gérard Paul Deshayes and Victor Audouin.
