Description
Instrument of uncertain attribution (Antonio Melloni or Giovan Tommaso Scala) described in the posthumously published and heavily revised work by Giovanni Battista Belluzzi, known as Sanmarino, Nuova inventione di fabricar fortezze [New invention for building fortresses] (1598). Hinged to the legs of the compass at the ends are two graduated rods that, depending on the position, allow the instrument to operate as archipendolo, oval compass, gunner’s square, or quadrant. In the lack of sufficient information from the treatise, we may assume that the rods bore a degree scale and shadow square.
